Renegades defense holds down Patriots

By Renegades Staff 08/08/2016, 11:15am CDT

Renegades win 14-8

New Hope – The Renegades have made franchise history by beating the South Metro Patriots on the 6th by a score of 14-8.  The game was expected to be a defensive battle and it turned out to be that just indeed.  The Renegades were held to just over 100 yards of total offense.  QB, Ryan Fay went 7 of 15 for 53 yards and 1 TD to WR Devin Payment, who also scored a two point conversion.  RB Sean Hayden led the ground game with 45 yards and a rushing TD.

The big plays came on defense.  The Renegades put up 7 sacks led by All Star Kyle Crozon with 3 of them and 8 tackles.  The defense held the Patriots offense to negative yards in the 1st half.  The secondary was ice cold keeping Patriots QB Brandon King from doing anything in the 2nd Qtr as well.  The Renegades defense sealed the game with a INT from Ben DeLisle in the last minute of the game.

The Renegades will be heading to Fargo to battle the Invaders in Premier Bowl VI for the 1st time in the teams history.  The Renegades have not been able to score on the Invaders defense all year, so the odds are against the Renegades already.  The Renegades offense has been on fire as of late with a solid running game behind their All Star Offensive line.  QB Ryan Fay will have a full arsenal of weapons this time.  Each of the two games the Renegades and Invaders have played have come where the Renegades have been short handed.  The game will be played on the 13th at 6 PM at the Invaders home field.

Renegades heading to the playoffs

By Renegades Staff 07/28/2016, 12:00am CDT

Renegades beat Sabercats 40-18

Collegeville – The Renegades defeated the Twin Cities Sabercats 40-18 at St. John’s University.  The Renegades were lead by a powerful offense led by QB Ryan Fay and Veteran RB Michael Iverson.  Fay went 9 of 13 in the air for 193 yards and 4 TD’s.  Iverson caught one of those TD’s, and also ran one in on the ground.  Sean Hayden led the ground game with 85 yards.

The Renegades defense was also very solid led by Veteran Kyle Crozon with five solo tackles, 2 for losses, and 2 sacks.  With the help of Houston Spooner and Pat Lopez getting two fumbles, the Renegades defense running like a well oiled machine.  Defensive Coordinator, Jake Hutt has done an outstanding job this season running one of the best defenses the Renegades have ever had.

The NSFL playoffs will begin on August 6th with the Renegades in the #3 seed, they will travel to Minneapolis to battle with the South Metro Patriots.  The series was split 1-1 with the last meeting between these teams ending up with a Renegades win 14-12.  The winner will either host the league Championship or travel to Fargo.

Granite City Renegades football team on sure footing

By Cori Hilsgen, The Newsleaders 07/21/2016, 12:15am CDT

The Granite City Renegades semi-pro football team has a good combination of team chemistry and is performing well this season.

On July 9, they beat the West Central Broncos, 40-6. Currently, the team is in the No. 3 seed in the Northern States Football League.

Their final game is Saturday, July 23 against the Twin City Sabercats.

Playoffs are not set yet, but could be after the Sabercat/Patriots game on July 23. If the Sabercats win, the Renegades secure the No. 3 seed and will face the Sabercats again Aug. 6 in North St. Paul. If the Patriots win, the game will determine the Renegades playoff spot. If the Renegades lose, they will host the Broncos on July 30. If the Renegades win, they will face the Sabercats on Aug. 6.

The Renegades, who are in the West Division of the Northern States Football League, began their season in April and will finish in August.

Owned by Brett and Danelle Weaver of Sartell, the team has 80 players signed up to play.

Weaver said 52 of those players are currently game-day ready.

“This is one of the best (teams), if not the best team, we have had since we began,” Weaver said. “We have a solid core of veteran players and a strong quarterback to build off of. We have a great combination of leadership, skill and loyalty. The chemistry between the players is the best I have seen since 2013 when we won the division championship.”

Players are an average age of 24 and are recruited from local schools, social media and by word of mouth from current players, which Weaver said is the most effective.

Home-field games are played at St. John’s University Clemens Stadium.

“We are so much more than a ‘football team,'” Weaver said. “We are based on solid core values of family, leadership and community. Our players come from all walks of life. We have players right out of high school to our oldest player in his upper 40s. We have fathers, veterans, active military, students, teachers and many other professions on this team.”

He said their players are all local athletes who do not get paid, which he said he feels demonstrates their passion for the game is greater than most paid players.

“Our long-term plans for this team are great,” Weaver said. “For those we have shared it with, there is one thing in common. It gives us all goose bumps and an adrenaline rush all at the same time. It’s a great feeling to have that kind of excitement.”

Some local area players include Anthony Matheny, Rice; Shane Raden, Sartell; Nate Hofman, Sartell; and Anthony Carpenter, St. Joseph. Coach Tommy Middagh is also from Sartell.

Matheny, who is the father of three children, enjoys spending time with family, the outdoors and helping others. He is a health-and-wellness coach who helps others create income by converting their spending into earning through a shopping annuity.

Matheny said he joined the team because he wanted to grow as a person not only physically but also mentally while being held accountable in a team setting.

“The family vibe and bond between the players is amazing and drives me to be a better person and player for myself and them,” Matheny said.

Weaver said, “Chemistry building is a crucial key to our success both on and off the field. Our diversity reflects our community and we make it work every day.”

Raden is married and has three children and said he spends as much time with his family as possible. He is a technical analyst for RBC Wealth Management in Minneapolis. Raden said he joined because he loves the game of football and wanted to learn how to play the game.

“Having no previous experience, this has been an interesting ride so far,” Raden said. “I love this team because of how close everyone is. We treat each other like brothers and we all share the same passion for this game. It’s amazing to me the dedication everyone has to this team, despite the other parts of life that tend to get in the way. I can honestly say I have grown as a person since joining the Renegades.”

Hofman said he is busy raising a family and driving truck. He loves football and wants to win a championship.

“The last two seasons, I didn’t know what to think about semi-pro football,” Hofman said. “I didn’t have a lot of fun. This season has helped me remember why I love football so much. The chemistry of this team is amazing this year. The camaraderie, trusting your teammate next to you on the field and just having fun out there – I love this team.”

Carpenter is a stay-at-home father with two children and said he is enjoying every moment he gets to see them grow up. He said he joined the team to build friendships, brotherhood and to play the game he loves so much.  Carpenter said he’s impressed with the chemistry built with every player.

“I also respect how this program is run on and off the field with the great volunteering opportunities it brings back to the community,” he said. “Oh, and I can’t lie, the winning is good also.”

Coach Middagh is a substitute teacher, coaches softball and football and works at the YMCA, while searching for a full-time job in educational or business leadership. Originally, he joined the team to build his resume as a coach for his dream career.

“I love this team because it gives me an opportunity to coach the sport I love and build relationships with other guys my age,” Middagh said. “I also love this team because of the camaraderie and brotherhood between (both) coaches and players.”

Renegades players and coaches try to give back to area needs. They have partnered with the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes and more.

The Weavers formed the team in 2009. The two met at a St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce event when Brett was the general manager of the Minnesota Fightin’ Scots semi-pro football team and Danelle was the new team cheer captain.

When the Scots disbanded, the Weavers decided after they started a family, they would build their own football franchise.

“We believed by building this team and forming a strong foundation, we could make the area a better place,” Weaver said.

According to their website, the mission statement of the team “is to provide a family-oriented form of entertainment and inspire athletes with a passion for the game of football the opportunity to continue playing the game they love.”

Their company vision “is to become a top-rated semi-pro football team with talent-driven men on the field, and leaders and heroes off the field.”

Brett is employed as a business development manager for Masterson Staffing Solutions, and Danelle is a registered nurse through CentraCare. They have three sons – Landon, 7; Raider, 4; and Major, 1.

Renegades sweep Broncos

By Renegades Staff 07/11/2016, 2:45pm CDT

New London – Saturday the Renegades beat the West Central Broncos, 40-6 to improve to (5-3, 2-2).  The Renegades gave up less than 300 yards of offense while putting up over 300 themselves, led by a 100 yard running game of Sean Hayden.  QB Ryan Fay threw three TD’s to three different WR, while the Renegade defense scored their first defensive TD of the season by the hands of Kyle Crozon and Corey Adams with a blocked pass that turned into a 46 yard INT (TD).

The Renegades are currently in the #3 seed in the NSFL and have a bye this week.  Our final home game is July 23rd against the Twin City Sabercats (4-3, 2-0).   The last time these two teams met was the season opener in North St. Paul where the Renegades won 18-13.  Although the Renegades are in the #3 seed right now, the playoffs are not set yet, but could be after the Sabercat/Patriots game on Saturday.  If the Sabercats win, the Renegades secure the #3 seed and will face the Sabercats again on August 6th in North St. Paul.  If the Patriots win, the game on the 23rd will determine the Renegades playoff spot.   If they lose, we will host the Broncos on July 30th.  If we win, we will face the Sabercats again on August 6th.

Big Game in Fargo this weekend

By Renegades Staff 06/22/2016, 11:00pm CDT

Renegades confident heading into 2nd matchup

Collegeville – The Renegades football team has the biggest game of the season thus far this Saturday!  The Renegades travel to Fargo to battle the Invaders (2-0, 6-0) who are undefeated and are looking to beat the Renegades (1-1, 4-2) to clinch the West Division in the NSFL.  The Renegades are rested after having a bye week, plus will have QB Ryan Fay returning to help give the Renegades offense some head steam.  Fay currently leads the league in passing yards, and with the league leading receiver, Devin Payment and #2 rusher in the league, Sean Hayden the Renegades offense is looking to make a move on the Invaders this weekend.

With the Renegades defense, lead by Coach Jake Hutt, they are looking to hold the Invaders to much less points, even though they held them to only 28 (better than any other defense).  The Renegades defensive core is led by Kyle Crozon (league leader in sacks -11) and Kelvin Robinson Jr. (league leader in INT – 4).  The defense is looking for redemption.  The game is set to begin at 6 PM and fans are able to listen Live at KensFM.com or locally at 89.1 FM

Renegades crush the Blitz

By Renegades staff 06/05/2016, 7:45pm CDT

Duluth – The Renegades crushed the Northland Blitz on June 4th by a score of 81-0.  The Renegades scored on the first offensive series with a 30 yard TD run by Sean Hayden, and the Renegades never looked back.  Scoring a franchise record 81 points last held by the 2012 team when they scored 56 on the Twin City Rhinos.  QB, Ryan Fay went 7/10, 177 yards, and 3 TD’s in the 1st half.

The Renegades set multiple team and single game records;

  • Most TD’s in a game (12) – was 6 back in 2013
  • Most team sacks (13) – was 9 back in 2013
  • Most rushing TD’s, 3 by Michael Iverson
  • Most sacks, 6 by Kyle Crozon
  • Fumble Recoveries, 2 by James Stauty

The Renegades have already scored more points this season than they ever have.  The most they have scored in an entire season was 152 back in 2012.  Should be a sign of what is in store the rest of the season with five regular season games left.

The Renegades have improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the West Division.  They now face their greatest challenge yet, the Fargo Invaders (4-0, 1-0) on June 11th at St. John’s University.  Kickoff is at 5 PM. The last time the Renegades hosted the Invaders they won the game with a last minute TD by Devin Payment to win the game 6 – 5.  This will be for the #1 spot in the West division and the Overall best record in the NSFL.

Renegades come alive in 4th Quarter

By Renegdes Staff 05/30/2016, 5:15pm CDT

Collegeville – The Renegades beat the South Metro Patriots 14 – 12 in the last five minutes of the 4th Qtr.  The Renegades started out causing a turnover on the opening kickoff and capitalizing with a TD from Veteran FB, Anthony Carpenter.  The Renegades caused another turnover of the next kickoff, but were not able to get in the end zone.

The Patriots scored in the next two quarters to take a 12-6 lead heading into the 4th Qtr, but the Renegades defense gave the team new life with a stifling stop Brandon King (QB) and the Patriots offense.  The Renegades led by QB Ryan Fay charged down the field with a never ending run game led by Jonas Marshall and Sean Hayden.  By the hands of Devin Payment, Ryan Fay found Devin on a slant route in front of Patriot DB, Tevis Wilson and with out stretched arms he found the end zone.  To cap it off and take the lead, Fay found the end zone on a 2 point conversion.

With a case of déjà vu, the Renegades went into the last 3 minutes with the lead thinking it was May 15th all over again, but this time DB Veteran Kelvin Robinson Jr. picked off King in the last 70 seconds  capping a victory for the Renegades who are now 3 – 1 Overall.  The Renegades travel to Duluth this weekend to face the Northland Blitz who just came off a shutout by the Sabercats.  Kickoff is at 4 PM at Duluth Public School Stadium.

Renegades rock the Broncos

By Renegades Staff 05/23/2016, 8:15am CDT

Collegeville, MN – The Renegades hosted the West Central Broncos in their 6th Annual Armed Forces Day Classic.  The Renegades striked first with a 9 yard TD from Ryan Fay to Darrien Stegner, but the Broncos would soon strike back and hold the Renegades offense the rest of the first half.

The Broncos came out the 3rd Qtr. firing on all cylinders and drove down the field to take the lead 14 – 6, but that gave the Renegades the fuel they needed on all sides of the ball.  The Renegades defense came alive with six sacks, and three turnovers.  That gave the offense the motivation they needed with Ryan Fay leading the charge with two strikes to Devin Payment and a 25 yard TD run.  Behind the running game trio of Sean Hayden, Jonas Marshall, and Anthony Carpenter the Renegades controlled the 2nd half, and when it was all said and done the Renegades beat the Broncos 30-14 to take 2nd place in the West Division.

The Renegades will be hosting the South Metro Patriots this weekend at Collegeville.  The last time these two teams met the Patriots came back in the last 70 seconds to steal a comeback from the Renegades and now they sit on top of the East Division at 2-1, but the Renegades are on their home field this time.

The game on the 28th will be the team’s Annual Cancer Battle game with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Renegades are ready for Week 2

By Renegades Staff 05/13/2016, 3:45pm CDT

Collegeville - The Renegades are traveling to Burnsville this Sunday to take on the South Metro Patriots (0-0, 0-1) at 3 PM at Burnsville  High School.  The Renegades are being led by QB, Ryan Fay (Princeton)  who led last week win over the Twin Cities Sabercats with over 400 yards of offense and a hard nosed defense.  The Renegades will be without star FB, Anthony Carpenter (St. Joseph), so they will depending on rookie Sean Hayden (St. Cloud) and Veteran Jonas Marshall (Big Lake) to control the ground game.

Next week the Renegades have a full schedule with a special camp at Oak Hill Elementary for the students on Thursday, then they will be at Buffalo Wild Wings on Friday night to get fans excited for their home opener on Saturday the 21st as they host their rival, the West Central Broncos.  The Broncos (0-0, 1-0) and traveling to Fargo this weekend to face the Invaders (0-0, 1-0).  Both teams are coming off shutouts last week and a combined 107 points between them.  The Renegades will face the Invaders on June 11th at Clemens Stadium.

Renegades pre-season game a success

By Renegades Staff 05/01/2016, 9:30pm CDT

St. Paul, MN – The Renegades pre-season wasn’t what many would say, in the semi-pro realm, very pretty when you look at the final score.  In fact, it was 65 – 0 in favor of the St. Paul Pioneers (#6).  If you were to look at the social media in certain circles you would see mocking of the Renegades loss to the #6 team in the Nation, the Pioneers.  But, in other circles, a deeper look is made of the games and it is in the details.

Anthony Carpenter, one of the first players in Renegades history, and season sack record holder with 23 has a positive outlook for this team, and it was amplified to him after the loss on Friday (April 29th).  “I saw lots of potential in this team” Carpenter said.  Carpenter, being with the team for six years, knew what the team was in for walking into Seafoam Stadium.  After the game, Carpenter was all smiles.  “Now we just fix the little things and we are set.  Our offense was inches from putting up 3-4 TD’s tonight” he said.  Carpenter last took the field three season ago, and helped Head Coach Brett Weaver win the team’s first Division Championship.  And now, he’s back to take the team one step further…the Premier Bowl!

Jake Hutt, the team’s Defensive Coordinator, shared Carpenter’s reaction to the preseason loss.  “Defense really stepped up in the 2nd half.” Coach Hutt said after the game.  With 20+ players not in attendance due to conflicts in scheduling, the Renegades were very short handed with only 27 players against the Pioneers full roster of 55.  Coach Hutt saw a great deal in his defense.  “We found out a lot about our new players and our team in general.”  “When guys came off the field of play, everyone came off wanting to fix their mistakes and asked lots of questions. I’m so proud of the guys!”

The Renegades start the regular season on May 7th when they travel back to the Twin Cities to take on the Sabercats at North St. Paul High School with a 6PM kickoff. The Sabercats have played two preseason games with losses to the River City Rough Riders on the 23rd, and the Midwest Outlaws on the 30th
