Broncos to play for MPFL title

West Central Broncos vs. Fargo Invaders for the Title

SPRING LAKE PARK — Joel Bauman capped a game-winninng drive with a 13-yard touchdown run and the Midwest Broncos will play for the Midwest Premier Football League championship after a 26-20 win over the Midwest Nightmare on Saturday.

The Broncos are riding a five-game winning streak after opening the season 1-3. They will play the Fargo Invaders for the league title at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“We have something special going on and nothing will make me prouder than to bring at state championship trophy back the the West Central area,” said Broncos head coach Willie Holmes.

The Broncos trailed 13-7 at halftime, but quarterback Steve Peppin scored on a 1-yard sneak and Brandon King scored his second TD of the game on a 62-yard punt return in the third quarter to take a 20-13 lead.

In the first quarter, Peppin and King hooked up on a 51-yard scoring pass.

The Nightmare’s Tyree Jones caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Sahmad Nakumbe to tie the game at 20.

With five minutes left, the Broncos put together an 80-yard scoring drive, with Bauman blowing in for the winning TD.

Bauman finished with 121 rushing yards as the Broncos ran for 283 yards.

Eric Johnson and Christian Olson both made six tackles, and Johnson had two sacks and Emmit Smith, who made five stops, also had a sack.

Broncos on a 4 game winning streak heading into playoffs

NEW LONDON — Another win over the first-place team will give the West Central Broncos momentum for the Midwest Premier Football League playoffs as they wrapped up the regular season Saturday evening by thrashing the Midwest Nightmare 27-9 at Peterson Field.

The No. 3-seeded Broncos will take a four-game winning streak into this Saturday’s semifinal game against the No. 2 Nightmare. The game will be played at Spring Lake Park High School in north Minneapolis at 6 p.m. The Nightmare, who beat the Broncos 17-6 earlier this season at home, are 6-2 and the Broncos 5-3.

Cameron Halvorson had a pair of first-half rushing touchdowns to give the Broncos a 14-0 lead at halftime Saturday. Halvorson scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter and from seven yards out in the second quarter.

A 52-yard field goal in the third quarter got the Nightmare on the board, but Steve Peppin threw a 91-yard TD pass to Diance Davis and Joel Bauman scored on a 49-yard run in the fourth quarter to take a comfortable 27-3 lead.

The Broncos notched 13 sacks — six alone from Emmit Smith and another three from Christian Olson — and ran for 305 yards. Bauman led the rushing attack with 89 yards while Peppin and Brandon King combined to pile up 172 passing yards.

Center City, MN - The MPFL Board is proud to announce the addition of two new teams to the league for the 2014 season; Fargo Invaders and Great Lakes Wolf Pack.  Each team brings something special to the MPFL and will be bringing some fire to make the 2014 season exciting for all the fans both old and new.

The Fargo Invaders are a new team that has emerged from the Fargo/Moorhead Lumberjacks which were a fall team in the MFFL.  To get more information on the Invaders, please visit www.fargoinvaders.org
