BURNSVILLE — Steve Peppin ran in a quarterback sneak in overtime and the West Central Broncos won their season opener 12-6 over the Midwest Monarchs on Saturday.

The game was dominated by defense, led by Broncos’ defensive end and former Renville County West player Nate Hoberg’s 12 tackles, seven sacks and a fumble recovery on the Monarchs’ 8-yard line.

“(Hoberg) was a major reason why we won the game,” Peppin said.

Dalton Clouse opened the scoring in the first quarter, giving the Broncos a 6-0 lead on an 11-yard run.

“(Clouse) really set the tone for the Broncos on offense,” Peppin said. “He brings a very powerful running style to our team.”

The Monarchs tied it in the second quarter when quarterback Brandon King hit Donzell Howard for a touchdown pass.

Clouse led the Broncos with 77 yards on the ground, and Tre Scott caught two passes for 31 yards.

Jarret McAllister made 10 tackles, Rene Vallejo eight and Blake Williams six for the Broncos.

The Broncos next play 7 p.m. Saturday against the Mankato Brawlers at Madelia High School.
