First Time's the Charm

In the first year of existence, the Fargo Invaders win the Midwest Premier Football League going 8-2.  The Invaders offense scored at least 31 points in 6 contests, while the defense never gave up more than 20 points.  Out of the ten games, the Invaders outscored their opponents 356-113.  Seven offensive players made the All Star teams, five from defense, and four specialists.
The Invaders capped off the season winning the Premier Bowl IV against the West Central Broncos 35-14.

The first play of the Premier Bowl went for a Touchdown, as Broncos Running Back Joel Bauman took a pitch up the left sidelines for an 80 yard touchdown.  The Invaders defense would give up just 33 more rushing yards the rest of the game, 19 credited to Bauman.  Fargo’s first series went for 30 yards before being forced to punt.  On the 2nd play of the 2nd Broncos series, Jay Greenhill intercepted the pass from Brandon King; however the offense went 3 & out.  The Invader defense quickly got the ball back again, forcing a punt after four plays.  This setup a 4 play, 71 yard drive which included a 14 yard Nick Jackson completion, a 24 yard Kevin Irby completion, and two runs by Brandon Jones of 9 & 24 yards.  With the score tied 7-7, the ensuing drive saw Martez Buchanan strip Bauman which was recovered by the Broncos; two plays later Rochenel JeanBaptiste intercepted Steve Peppin and returned it to the 14 yard line.

The Broncos defense tightened-up as the game moved to the second quarter, holding the Invaders to a 31-yard Field Goal by Lezan Tahir.  The quarter continued with next two series showcasing Greenhill’s 2nd Interception, followed immediately by a Rene Vallejo interception; setting up the Broncos with good field position.  It took the Broncos 6 plays and 34 yards to get Bauman’s second touchdown, this time from 6 yards out.  The half winded down, with Tahir missing a 46-yard Field Goal wide-left; leaving the Broncos on top 14-10.

The League All Stars were honored at Halftime.

The Invaders came out of the gates showing their M.O. by pounding the rock.  The first series covered 58 yards, capped by a 39-yard Tahir Field Goal.  The defense was a spectacle to be seen in the second half, giving up just 24 total yards all half.  The offense came right back the 2nd series gaining all 63 yards on the ground, with the touchdown coming on a Jones 17 yard run; a two-point conversion pass to Irby made the score 21-14 in favor of the home team.

The teams exchanged series while the Quarter rolled over.  The Broncos were setup at the Invaders’ 31-yard line, poised to tie the game after a 51 yard Punt Return by Broncos’ Brandon King; when Ronald Buck stripped Bauman and Marcus Pratt scooped up the loose ball and took it 60 yards for the Invader Touchdown, with 9:30 left in the contest.  After a few stops by both teams, Invaders’ Sam Weisz sacked King on 4th Down on the Bronco’s 5 yard line.  Alex Becher finished off the scoring with a 3 yard QB Keeper with 1:30 left on the clock.
