Broncos hand Invaders their second loss, Secure 3 seed

NEW LONDON — Playing in his first game of the season for the West Central Broncos, Joel Bauman rushed for 155 yards and the winning touchdown to help the Broncos take down the previously first-place Fargo Invaders 18-15 in a Midwest Premier Football League game Saturday evening at Peterson Field.

Also coming up big for the Broncos was the defense, sparked by Corey Smith. The strong safety intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble to help the Broncos hand Fargo its second loss in three games after going 5-0 to open the season. In all, the Invaders had five turnovers.

Also notching an interception for the Broncos was Brian Burwell and Rene Vallejo, while Jeremy Hall recovered another Fargo fumble and Emmit Smith pocketed two sacks.

The Broncos led 12-0 after the first quarter when Keante Johnson and Burwell hauled in touchdowns covering 20-plus yards from Steve Peppin and Brandon King. Fargo scored twice in the second quarter when 2009 Renville County West graduate Brian Harper caught two TD pass, but sandwiched in between was Bauman’s 7-yard TD run that put the Broncos up 18-7.

The teams played a scoreless second half, allowing the Broncos to win their third straight, improve to 4-3, remain unbeaten at Peterson Field (9-0) and avenge a 57-19 road loss to the Invaders on June 7.

Bauman averaged nearly 12 yards a carry and Jarret McAllister ran for another 101 yards on just eight carries.

The third-place Broncos wrap up the regular season this Saturday by hosting the first-place Midwest Nightmare (6-1) at 7 p.m. on Peterson Field. The Nightmare beat the Broncos 17-6 on May 10 in Spring Lake Park.
